Hidden among the towering peaks of Papua New Guinea, the Simbu are a people of warriors, farmers, and guardians of an ancient tradition that binds earthly life to the world of spirits. Their name comes from the local word “Simbu!”, an exclamation of awe uttered by explorers upon first encountering this proud tribe in the Highlands.
For centuries, the Simbu have lived in harmony with the mountains, cultivating the land with mastery and defending their villages with complex tribal strategies. Clan alliances were essential, as were the sacred rituals that marked every aspect of their existence, from harvest to the passage into the afterlife.
One of the most distinctive aspects of their culture is the “Dancing Skeletons”, an ancient practice in which warriors paint their bodies to resemble skeletal spirits. This ritual was not only a means to intimidate enemies but also a symbol of the connection between the living and their ancestors, a bridge between the visible and the invisible.
